High Shear Blending in an IBC
High-Shear Mixing (HSM) Technology
The HSM Technology
is a new and exciting technology for IBC blending. An additional mixing bar is
added to the IBC which is rotated at high speed to add high sheer to the IBC as
it is tumbled by the IBC blender. The benefit to the user is the ability to dry
blend formulations that have extremely low percentages of APIs and still
maintain a homogenous blend.

The bottom-driven PMA™ from Aeromatic-Fielder and the top-driven ULTIMAGRAL™
from Collette are stand-alone pharmceutical blender mixers.
What ever the subsequent production steps, the formulation of an active
compound and other excipients needs to be mixed homogeneously. Low shear mixing
relies on the planetary movement of the mixer arm to achieve homogeneity, while
high shear mixing uses a high intensity mixing blade resulting in a homogeneous
blend. Which technique is most suitable depends on the subsequent production
